Reign ‘Shocker’: Francis Dying in Season 3, EP Confirms

Crank up the Beyoncé, Reign fans, because Queen Mary is about to find herself a single lady.

Given the grim prognosis King Francis received at the end of the CW drama’s second season, this probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, but Toby Regbo’s character is going to meet his maker during the upcoming third season, premiering Friday at 8/7c.

“I wanted people to get used to it; there was no way around it in the storytelling,” executive producer Laurie McCarthy tells EW.com about why she’s chosen to reveal Francis’ impending death. “We’ve done shocking deaths and that’s not the tone of this story.”

This news should make Friday’s season premiere — particularly the more tender moments between Mary and Francis — all the more bittersweet.

Netflix Picks Up UK Rights To ‘Reign’ Season 3

Netflix UK has picked up the exclusive UK broadcast rights to the upcoming third season of The CW’s period drama Reign from international distributor CBS Studios International, TVWise has learned.

The third season of Reign will premiere on Netflix UK on Saturday October 10th, when the first episode will be available to stream, less than 24 hours after its debuts in the United States. New episodes will then continue to be made available every Saturday.

Penned by Stephanie Sengupta and Laurie McCarthy, Reign tells the previously unknown and untold story of Mary Queen of Scots’ rise to power when she arrives in France as a 15-year-old, betrothed to Prince Francis, and with her three best friends as ladies-in-waiting. The drama is produced by CBS Television Studios and stars Adelaide Kane, Anna Popplewell, Toby Regbo, Celina Sinden, Megan Follows, Janessa Grant, Caitlin Stasey, Torrance Coombs and Rossif Sutherland.

The acquisition of the show’s third season comes out of a long-running life-of-series deal that Netflix UK sealed with CBS Studios International last month, which saw the streaming service become Reign‘s exclusive UK broadcaster. Prior to that there had been little interest from UK broadcasters in the show, despite the obvious appeal of the subject matter. The first two seasons of Reign are currently available to stream on Netflix UK.

This is yet another example of Netflix UK riding to the rescue of a hit U.S. show which, for one reason or another, has been overlooked by traditional UK broadcasters. They previously did the same with Breaking Bad, picking it up from season three onwards after it was dropped by FX UK and Channel 5; Once Upon A Time, which was dropped by Channel Five after two seasons; and the ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars, which briefly aired on MTV UK before Netflix took the rights.

Solo reign is fine for Kane

The West Australian — Ever since she rose to fame playing Mary Queen of Scots in hit US costume drama Reign, fans have been speculating about the love life of WA actress Adelaide Kane.

Rumours recently emerged the Claremont-raised star was in a real-life relationship with her on-screen beau, English actor Toby Regbo, after fans took a series of cryptic Twitter posts as proof they were an item.

But Kane is more than happy to set the record straight, telling AAA Weekend she understands why people want talk of a romance with Regbo to be true.

“I do get it – when you like the characters together so much on the show it seems like a natural progression that the actors would get together,” the 23-year-old says.

“But we are not the characters – we are very different from our characters in real life. While I adore Toby and I think he is a very talented actor and handsome man, he and I are not compatible in that way. We are friends and that’s how it is going to stay.”

Kane split with her long-time boyfriend, Revenge star Connor Paolo, last year and says she often feels like she is the only single one out of the show’s young cast.

“Everyone else is in a long-term committed relationship,” she laughs.

“Honestly, I just don’t have the time to date, on-set or off. I am kinda busy with 75-hour work weeks. One day I will have time to go on a date or two but, until then, I will take my fictional relationships.”

With the second season of Reign about to start filming, Kane’s hectic work schedule means she will not return home to Perth until Christmas but confesses she is eagerly awaiting the trip.

“Perth is always on my mind – that’s where my family is,” the brunette says. “I reset when I come back and see my mother and brother and all my cousins. It’s so good to get back because family is very important to me.”

Reign will begin airing in Australia on Fox8 from August.
